Yes, the world will end – but not on Friday, December 21, 2012. This is the message that NASA and other science agencies of the government is trying to send to us. However, many people are still convinced or at least alarmed that the world will end on Friday.
Although many people have already argued that the December 21, 2012 End of the World is not true, I will add my voice and explain why it is a hoax. I will also point out another date that might be the end of the world – April 13, 2036 which is a Sunday.
Why People Think the World Will End on Friday, December 21, 2012
For most of us, the reason why we are alarmed that the world will end on Friday is the discovery of the Mayan Calendar that ends on exactly December 21, 2012. Our calendar has days and 30 days make up a month. 12 months is a year and every January 1, we enter a new year.
The Mayan calendar is also like that. It has days called K’in. Twenty K’in is a Winal and 18 Winal is one Tun, the Mayan year.
The Mayan people are fond of the number 20 and they multiplied by 20 and called it a K’atun – that’s two decades. Twenty K’atun is called B’ak’tun (not Baktin).
Now here’s the fun part. The baktin, I mean B’ak’tun that we are now in will end on December 21, 2012! That’s why the doomsday obsessed people think that the Earth will end on Friday.
Do you think the Earth will end on December 31? Of course not. It will just be a new year after that. In the same sense, it will just be a new B’ak’tun for the Mayan people. You can even go to Guatemala to celebrate with them.
So When Will the World Really End?
After December 21, 2012, doomsday people will most probably shift the date of the Armageddon to April 13, 2036. A large asteroid named Apophis will hit the earth on that date – a Sunday.
Or at least it might. Apophis was discovered in 2004 and caused an alarm because initial measurements predicted that it will hit the Earth on 2029. Don’t panic.
Additional and more precise measurements ruled out the impact on Earth or the moon on 2029. Instead, Apophis must pass through a very small region near the Earth called the Keyhole so that it will hit the Earth on April 13, 2036.
The chance that Apophis will pass this keyhole and impact the Earth on April 13, 2036 is calculated to be at 0.000004 percent – very unlikely.
Even NASA is so sure the Earth will not end on December 21, 2012 that they released a video for the day after that, December 23, 2012.
So In Short, the World Will Not Really End?
The truth is the World is not here for eternity. It will end. But the end will come after 4,000,000,000 years when the Sun will explode and become a red giant.
There is another reason the Earth will meet a sooner end – Global Warming.
We talk about the End as a result of something out of our control – asteroids, tsunamis, super storms, the coming of Jesus and others. But WE are currently ending the Earth with our activities that hurt the environment.
Now it’s your turn, what do you think about the end of the world?
