The International Data Corporation (IDC) published a report showing local electronics company Cherry Mobile as the top smartphone vendor in the country last year, 2014.

Cherry Mobile with its 21.9% market share beat global brands such as second placer Samsung (13.3%) and fourth placer Lenovo (6.5%). Overall, global brands declined in volume while local brands flourished.

Philippines’ Smartphone Shipments by Vendor, 2014

Rank Vendor 2014 Market Share
1 Cherry Mobile 21.9%
2 Samsung 13.3%
3 MyPhone 11.2%
4 Lenovo 6.5%
5 Torque 4.8%
Others 42.3%
Total 100%

Local brands MyPhone (11.2%) and Torque (4.8%) made it to the top five as the third and fifth placer respectively. The statistics is based on IDC’s Asia/Pacific Mobile Phone Tracker.

Furthermore, IDC says it’s the sub-₱4,000 smartphones that are driving the Philippine market accounting for more than half (58%) of all smartphone shipments.

Cherry Mobile has A LOT of budget-friendly smartphones lead by the Flare line-up with prices around the 4k mark.

Chinese brands such as Xiaomi and Oppo did not make it to the top five due to the first’s limited supply and the latter’s tamed marketing. On the other hand, Cherry Mobile is flooding the market with their smartphones and tapping celebrities such as Kim Chui and John Lloyd Cruz as product endorsers.

The IDC predicts that smartphone shipment in the Philippines will further increase by 20% this year. Smartphone prices are also expected to go down to sub-₱2,000.
