As more and more companies embrace USB Type-C, Xiaomi unveiled its first smartphone with the reversible port – the Xiaomi Mi 4c.
It’s a 5-inch smartphone with several color options and runs on the hexa core Snapdragon 808 processor. It also boasts several new features including Edge Tap and Sunlight Display.
The Xiaomi Mi 4c has a 5-inch screen with full HD resolution from Sharp, AUO or LG. The bezels are very slim and the Sunlight Display allows it to be bright enough even under bright lights while still saving energy.
Its right and left edges are sensitive to taps, hence ‘Edge Tap’. While the camera app is open, a single tap at the phone’s edge will make it take a picture while a double tap means back for all apps.
Users can double tap the screen to wake up the phone. It can also be used to control different appliances as a remote such as TVs, AC units and even DSLR cameras!
Here’s how to use Edge Tap on the Mi 4c. |
The Xiaomi Mi 4c uses the Snapdragon 808 chipset from Qualcomm. It’s a hexa core (6!) processor running at a maximum of 1.82GHz with an Adreno 418 graphics renderer.
There are two versions of the phone – a cheaper one with 2GB of RAM and 16GB of built-in storage and another with 3GB of RAM and 32GB of storage.
Both versions do not have a microSD card slot. Users can connect an external storage device via USB OTG though. A USB Type-C to MicroUSB 2.0 adaptor is sold separately.

As expected, the Xiaomi Mi 4c comes in several color options including white, black, blue, yellow and pink. However, it will only have MIUI 6 out of the box. A MIUI 7 update is promised after a few weeks.
Photography is handled by a 13MP main camera with an image sensor from Sony or Samsung. It also employs phase detection autofocus for sharper pictures and a two-tone LED flash.
There’s also a 5MP front camera that supports wide angle shots and enhances selfies.

The Xiaomi Mi 4c is a dual SIM smartphone with 4G LTE connectivity. It also supports dual band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.1, GPS and Infrared.
A non-removable 3,080mAh Lithium-ion battery powers the smartphone. It can reach 40% of battery capacity in one hour of charging since it supports Quick Charge 2.0.
There are no plans yet to sell the Xiaomi Mi 4c outside of China. It has an official price of around ₱9,500 (16GB) and ₱11,000 (32GB) in the company’s homeland.
