Tourists and island dwellers in Boracay can now enjoy faster mobile internet speeds thanks to Smart’s newly deployed LTE-Advanced network also known as 4.5G .
A whopping 260 Mbps speedtest result was recorded in the island during a conference! LTE-A achieves this by combining two or more radio frequencies – a technique called ‘carrier aggregation’. This increases the available bandwidth dramatically.

There are only a handful of devices that are compatible with LTE-A in the Philippines. These are mostly flagship phones such as the Samsung Galaxy S7, Samsung Galaxy Note 5, Samsung Galaxy A8, iPhone 6S, iPhone 6S Plus, Blackberry Passport, Huawei Mate 8, LG G4 and Sony Xperia Z5. For tablets, there’s only the 9.7-inch iPad Pro.
“Combined with our other network improvement initiatives for both our mobile and fixed line networks, the introduction of LTE-A will help boost internet services in the country and enable more Filipinos to enjoy and benefit from the fast-growing range of digital services that PLDT and Smart offer,” PLDT and Smart chief technology and information advisor Joachim Horn said.
Aside from Boracay, Smart has also tested LTE-A in Davao and Makati. We’re hoping for more areas to enjoy faster mobile internet speeds soon.
