After acquiring the telecommunications assets of San Miguel Corporation, both Globe and Smart have started operating 4G LTE services in the 700MHz band over several areas.
Globe became the first to tune its cell site in Diliman, Quezon City to the said frequency while Smart followed immediately with a base station in Tanay, Rizal then at Ecoland, Matina, Davao City and Manggahan, Pasig.
Using smartphones that are compatible with 4G LTE on the 700MHz band, both telecommunications companies recorded speeds of around 100Mbps. When combined with 4G LTE on the 1800MHz band using a technique called Carrier Aggregation, Smart recorded a whooping 222Mbps!
Of course, users will experience a lesser speed compared to the above results as more people start using the 700MHz band. Nevertheless, it will still show an improved mobile internet speed and better signal reception even indoors.
Both telcos plan to tune in more cell sites to this frequency in the coming weeks. Hopefully, it won’t be confined to metropolitan areas.
