Browsing the internet now happens more frequently on Android than Windows-powered devices worldwide. This is according to StatCounter GlobalStats.
The researchers found out that in March 2017, Android’s worldwide internet usage market share rose to 37.93%. While the difference is small, this puts it higher than the 37.91% market share of Windows.
“The main drivers of the breakthrough were growth of smartphones to access the internet, a decline in sales of traditional PCs and the impact of Asia on the global market,” StatCounter CEO Aodhan Cullen said.
Based on the graph, Android’s market share will continue to rise while Windows is declining. However, the next major shift in how people access the internet will have the biggest impact on the trend. This can be Augmented Reality or Artificial Intelligence.
Google is improving the Google Assistant with Artifical Intelligence while Microsoft is further developing its Hololens product. The later relies on Augmented Reality.
Despite its lead worldwide, Windows still leads in the Philippines in terms of internet browsing market share. This might change soon though as more and more Filipinos use smartphones instead of laptops and desktop computers.
