Apple launched the first iPhone in 2007. Now, a decade later, it launches the iPhone X to commemorate the product that changed the face of mobile phones forever.
The device is packed with new features such as a near bezel-less display, six-core A11 chipset, facial recognition for security and 3D sensors for augmented reality applications.
The iPhone X uses OLED technology in its 5.8-inch display with a resolution of 1242 x 2800 pixels. This provides more vivid colors and uses power more efficiently than traditional LCD displays.
Another consequence of using this technology is its deep blacks. In some cases, it results in an illusion of a true bezel-less display.
The notch at the top of the display makes room for the front camera, earpiece and several sensors. It’s used by company as an icon that stands out from other smartphones.
Even if the iPhone X has a 5.8-inch display, its body is only slightly bigger than the iPhone 8. This is a result of the near bezel-less design as well as a taller than usual aspect ratio of 18.5:9.
It still uses a stainless steel frame but the front and back of the device are glass. This allows wireless charging but also turns it into a fingerprint magnet.
The iPhone X is powered by a new six-core Apple A11 chipset. There are two high performance CPU cores running a 2.74GHz and four power efficient cores.
Accompanying the new chipset is 3GB of RAM that should be plenty to handle split view of the new iOS11 as well as newer mobile games on the Appstore.
For photography, the iPhone X is equipped with a dual rear camera system composed of two 12.0 Megapixel image sensors. Both have optical image stabilization but one has a wider field of view.
The two cameras are arranged vertically flanking the dual-tone LED flash. Supposedly, this results in better photos and improved AR functions.
It also has a 7.0 Megapixel selfie camera that uses technology from PrimeSense for facial recognition.
The iPhone X is still a single SIM smartphone with 4G LTE connectivity. There’s also dual band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC for Apple Pay and an Infrared blaster used by its facial recognition feature.
Instead of a lightning port, it now uses USB Type-C. Sadly, there’s no hope for the return of the 3.5mm audio jack.
Apple says the iPhone X can last up to 2 hours more than the iPhone 7 on a single charge. It supports fast charging and wireless charging too!
There are also several sensors on the device. It includes a barometer, compass, gyroscope and ambient light sensor.
The official price of the iPhone X is $999 – just around ₱50,000.00 for the 64GB variant. That’s the same as the recently launched Samsung Galaxy Note 8.
Shipping starts on November 3, later than the iPhone 8.
