Owners of older iPhones such as the still popular iPhone 5s and iPhone 6 swear that an iOS upgrade will slow down their device.
Apple addressed this issue with the unveiling of iOS 12. Craig Federighi, Apple’s Senior VP for Software Engineering cited a 40% faster app launches while the camera opens 70% faster after swiping from the homescreen.
An old iPhone or iPad running on iOS 12 will also exhibit improved performance while under heavy load. This happens when playing a game or running resource intensive apps.
Apple’s own testing of the iPhone 6 Plus showed that app launches are twice as fast on iOS 12 compared to iOS 11.4. Of course, other factors can still affect the phone’s performance.
All Apple devices that can currently run on iOS 11 will also be able to upgrade to iOS 12. These include the iPhone 5s, iPhone SE and all newer iPhones. The iPad mini 2, iPad Air, iPad 5th gen, 9.7-inch iPad Pro, 12.9-inch iPad Pro and all newer iPads are also compatible with the new operating system upgrade.
The iOS 12 developer beta is now available to download for developers to test and upgrade their app features. Meanwhile, a public beta might be released before June ends while the final iOS 12 release date will be in September together with this year’s new iPhones.
