The International Data Corporation or IDC has released its market study for the second quarter of the year 2018.

It shows the top 5 smartphone brands in the world according to the millions of units shipped. There is one surprising result: Huawei surpasses Apple for the second place!

Samsung Continues to be the Top 1

Samsung remains the top 1 smartphone brand in the world for this quarter. This is due to the company’s several smartphone models in different price segments starting from entry level to the high-end flagships.

However, Samsung saw a 10.4% decline in shipments compared to the same period last year. According to IDC, the Samsung Galaxy S9 and S9+ had slower than usual sales. Hopefully, Samsung can catch a break with the upcoming Samsung Galaxy Note 9.

Huawei beats Apple for the first time!

This is the first time that Huawei shipped more smartphones compared to Apple. It’s largely due to the Huawei P20 and P20 Pro that propelled the brand into the radar of more customers.

There’s also the GPU Turbo update that the company will release this month to several devices. Announcing a big performance update like this increases the consumers’ trust for the company.

Apple faces decline

Apple remains a huge market driver with the iPhone X but the intense competition forced the company out of its usual second spot.

The company may soon recover with the upcoming launch of three new iPhone models that will cater to the high end, high midrange and midrange price points.

Xiaomi continues to grow

Xiaomi saw a near 50% growth in shipments from the same period last year. The growth is largely fueled by its impressive performance in India and Indonesia.

Meanwhile, Xiaomi continues to release new smartphones in the Philippines. There are now two Mi stores in the country in addition to its online shops.

OPPO closes the ranking at the 5th spot

OPPO takes the last spot in this ranking but still posted a 5.1% growth compared to the same period last year. The company has been expanding in Africa and the Middle East but slowed down a bit in its established SEA markets.

Its recent launch of the OPPO Find X resulted in an increase of brand awareness due to the phone’s innovative design.
