The Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 is currently the most affordable smartphone with a motorized pop-up selfie camera from an international brand in the Philippines.
I’ve taken the phone out of its box and checked the included freebies for the upcoming full review. Here are my unboxing and initial hands-on experience.
A free phone case.
The first item inside the box is the smartphone itself. I have the Midnight Black color variant but it’s also available in Sapphire Blue and Emerald Green. Let’s talk more about the device below.
For now, let’s take a look at the free phone case. It’s the usual soft transparent jelly case but there’s a cutout at the top purposefully created to accommodate the pop-up selfie camera.
Earphones, 10W charger, and USB Type-C cable.
The other contents of the box are the 10W charger, USB Type-C cable, basic earphones, SIM ejector pin and a couple of documentations.
Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 hands-on.
The Huawei Y9 Prime 2019 is pretty big. It has a 6.59-inch FHD+ display that delivers a truly full-screen experience since there’s no notch or holes for the selfie camera. This makes it perfect for watching videos and playing games.
Out of the box, the device runs on EMUI version 9 software and appears smooth when opening apps and scrolling newsfeeds. There’s more than 115GB of free storage with a few pre-installed third-party apps including Facebook, Lazada, and Google apps.
Rear cameras and SIM card tray.
Security options include the usual pin, pattern, and fingerprint recognition. Face unlock is not enabled probably as a safety measure for the durability of the pop-up selfie camera.
Motorized pop-up selfie camera.
I snapped a couple of pictures using the triple rear cameras and motorized pop-up selfie camera of the device. Here are the sample pictures:

The rear cameras produce good-looking pictures both for landscapes and close-up subjects. Meanwhile, the selfie camera can also create sharp and detailed pictures. However, selfies are a bit overexposed.
I’ll have to test the camera quality of the device further by taking more pictures and videos in different situations.
