As the 2022 Philippine General Election approaches, the risk of online attacks against election-related websites and individuals also increases.
Hence, Google is offering protection for Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks, account hacking, phishing, malware, and other threats. This includes two services – Project Shield and Google’s Advanced Protection Program (APP).
Websites about election monitoring, human rights, journalists, and media organizations might become a target of DDoS attacks.
In simplest terms, these attack uses thousands or millions of bots to send fake requests to the websites’ servers. When left unmitigated, the servers eventually become overloaded resulting in the website becoming offline.
Project Shield uses Google’s advanced technologies and global infrastructure to filter out these fake requests and keep the website online.

Individuals such as candidates, journalists, activists, campaign teams, and policymakers also face online threats.
Google’s Advanced Protection Program protects individual accounts including Gmail and Google Drive as well as devices like smartphones and laptops. This is in addition to the built-in security of devices and two-factor authentication.
The service is free of charge but at least one physical security key is needed. These are already available in online shops like Shopee and Lazada.
