The vivo Y22s comes in a white box with a shiny vivo logo and metallic model name on its front side. At the back are some of its best features like the 50MP camera and 5000mAh battery.
Opening the box immediately reveals the smartphone in a protective plastic layer. Sliding it off and seeing the back design of the Summer Cyan color variant was a pleasant surprise.
vivo smartphones usually have pretty designs but the vivo Y22s looks like it received more love from the company’s design engineers. It has patterns that resemble feathers that slightly shifts in tone when light hits it at different angles.
It’s also available in a tamer Starlit Blue color scheme but this one is better in terms of design.
Underneath the phone are two pamphlets – the quick start guide and a warranty certificate. Still under those is a FREE phone case.
It’s a transparent jelly case that protects the phone from accidental bumps and scratches while keeping its pretty design visible.
The last contents of the vivo Y22s box are its charger, USB Type-C cable, and SIM ejector pin.
Its charger has a rated output of 9V/2A or 18 watts of maximum charging rate. vivo claims it can re-charge the device up to 70% in 70 minutes and we’ll test that in the full review.
Sadly, there are no free earphones inside the box.
Now, let’s take a closer look at the vivo Y22s. On its right side are the volume buttons and power button with embedded fingerprint scanner. I enabled the fingerprint unlock function during the set-up process and it can unlock the device quickly.
At the bottom are the loudspeaker, USB Type-C port, pin-hole microphone, and 3.5mm audio jack. There’s nothing on the left side of the device.
Its SIM card tray is accessible at the top. It can accommodate two nano-SIM cards and a micro-SD card with a dedicated slot.
On the front side is its 6.55-inch HD+ display. I’ll examine this screen further in the full review but in my unboxing experience, I notice slight pixelation in some of its app icons because I’m used to FHD+ displays.
The side bezels are narrow but the chin is more substantial. There’s also a notch or screen cutout at the top of the screen for the selfie camera.
At the back are the camera array, trendy design, and vivo logo. It has a 50 Megapixel main camera, 2 Megapixel secondary camera, and dual-LED flash.
Here’s a sample picture from the phone’s rear camera:
The vivo Y22s runs on Android 12 OS with Funtouch 12 user interface. It looks neat but there are several pre-loaded apps including TikTok, foodpanda, Spotify, Facebook, and more. Thankfully, these can be easily uninstalled.
Taking a peek at the Settings reveals its Qualcomm Snapdragon 680 chipset and 128GB of internal storage. Only 19.14GB is used by the system and pre-loaded apps.
That means around 108GB is still free for games, pictures, videos, and other files. It can also read up to 1TB memory cards for even more storage space.
The vivo Y22s feels slim and light at 8.38 mm and 192 grams. Its front panel is made up of glass while the back and sides use plastic.
Still, it’s a sturdy and well-built device.
I will be testing the vivo Y22s for a full review soon. This will include its display quality, gaming performance, camera capabilities, battery life, and connectivity.
